PTPP History

Polish Society for Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy was established in 2003 by an initiative of psychotherapeutic communities from Kraków, Tricity and Warsaw that were interested in psychoanalytic way of thinking. Its establishment was a reaction to the need of a local organization that would associate therapists basing their work on psychoanalytic theories. The process aligned with an all-European movement of similar societies being brought to life in various countries at the time.

Since its beginning, the Society was meant to be united with the European Federation for Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy. PTPP formally and legally became a member of the Federation in 2004.

The first president of PTPP was Maciej Musiał, psychotherapist from Tricity area.

Within PTPP there are two sections which lead their own trainings: Section for Psychotherapy of Child and Adolescent and Section for Psychotherapy of Couple and Family. In PTPP there are also regional structures: Divisions and Circles that associate psychotherapist living in the same regions. Divisions and Circles do additional work by popularizing psychoanalytic thought.

PTPP organizes an annual conference. Since 2016 it also co-organizes conference “Working Psychoanalytically with Couples”. The Society takes part in organizing international conferences (along with EFPP or Frances Tustin Memorial Trust)

Logo

Since 2013 PTPP has its logo that correlates to the metaphor of an iceberg. Sigmund Freud used this metaphor to depict the structure of human psyche.

Just like an iceberg of which majority is hidden under water, human psyche consists mostly of what is invisible and hidden under the surface of consciousness.

The colors are related to two main drives steering human motivation: Eros (the life drive) and Thanatos (the death drive).

The mind is like an iceberg – only a seventh of its mass floats above water .
