The relations between psychoanalysis and movies have their long tradition and a common moment of birth – in 1895 the Lumiere brothers invented the movie projector and Freud with Breuer issued “Studies on hysteria”. Throughout the whole 20th century we can observe both an immense interest of movie directors in psychoanalytic theory (e.g. Hitchcock, Fritz Lang or Bertolucci), as well as fascination of psychoanalysis with movies resulting in rise of many theories, interpretations of specific movies and a movie in general, as a phenomenon. In the 60. and 70. psychoanalytic movie criticism has become an academic discipline (based mainly on Lacan’s theories) and remains to this day one of the most commonly used approaches in the study of cinemaup to the present day. Another step in tightening the relationship were probably more and more frequent meetings between movie makers, critics and movie historians with theorists and practitioners of psychoanalysis together with – last but not least – the audience, movie enthusiasts (as at European Psychoanalytic Film Festival in London, initiated in 2001).
This is the sort of meeting formula that we would like to offer in the movie clubs we lead. We aim at combining the tradition of DKF (discussional movie clubs) with a psychoanalytic way of thinking about movies. We invite every person interested in watching and discussing movies to join in with any of the clubs throughout Poland.
