The Members of the Polish Society for Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy are divided into:
Candidate Members, Associate Members, Full Members (certified), Honorary Members, Supporting Members. Additionally, a Full Member can with time and experience (and after meeting certaincriteria specified by PTPP Council) apply for Supervisor and/or Training Psychotherapist license. In accordance with PTPP statute, a proficiency in Polish language is required for a person to become a Member (except for: Honorary and Supporting Membership).
Candidate Members
Candidates are members who have taken up training. They don’t have voting rights within PTPP. A candidate is a person who:
- Graduated from psychology, medicine, social sciences or humanities. Required degree is: Masters or Doctor of Medicine (in case of a different education please reach out to PTPP Council with a formal notion)
- Has started theoretical training that is aligned with the program approved by PTPP Council
- Plans to develop further as psychoanalytic psychotherapist
Associate members
Associate Members are people on different stages of full psychoanalytic psychotherapy training. They have passive voting rights within the Society but cannot be chosen for Society’s authorities. An Associate Member is w person who:
- Graduated from psychology, medicine, social sciences or humanities. Required degree is: Masters or Doctor of Medicine (in case of a different education please reach out to PTPP Council with a formal notion)
- Is taking part in theoretical training that is aligned with the program approved by PTPP Council or has finished it
- Is undergoing their own psychoanalytic psychotherapy or psychoanalysis in a setting of at least three sessions a week with a therapist approved by PTPP Council as training therapist or has finishedit
- Is working as psychoanalytic psychotherapist under supervision (with supervision: taking place at least once a week; concerning therapeutic process in a setting of at least two sessions per week ormore; led by a supervisor approved by PTPP Council)
full members
Full Members are therapists who have received Certificate of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist. In alignment with the PTPP Statute, the PTPP Certificate can be issued for a person who:
- Graduated from psychology, medicine, social sciences or humanities. Required degree is: Masters or Doctor of Medicine (in case of a different education please reach out to PTPP Council with a formal notion)
- Has finished full training approved by PTPP Council
- Has undergone at least 4 years of their own psychoanalytic psychotherapy or psychoanalysis with a psychotherapist approved by PTPP Council in a setting of at least three sessions a week
- Has received recommendations from two separate supervisors approved by PTPP Council. The supervisions are to take place at least once a week and concern two patients who are in a setting of two sessions a week or more in psychoanalytic psychotherapy. (Condition for people who have started their training before 01.09.2017:) Each psychotherapeutic process is to last minimum a year
- Has received positive recommendations from at least two supervisors for leading the therapeutic process of at least two patients (total number of sessions should be at least 360). One of those patients should take part in therapy in a setting of at least two times (recommended: three times) a week amounting to at least 240 hours of therapy (with two sessions a week it’s 120 weeks or 27 months or 2,25 years = 2 years 4 months). The accumulated number of supervision hours should be not less than 200. At least one of the cases should be supervised for at least 2 years in a setting of one supervision a week. The Certificate cases should be supervised, and it is recommended that at least one of them includes the phase of finalizing the psychotherapeutic process. (the last condition is aligned with EFPP regulations and regards therapists who have started their training after 01.09.2017)
- Has presented an introductory paper – presentation of their work with a patient – that had been accepted by Qualification Committee of the PTPP Council in an anonymous voting by majority of the Committee (meaning more than 50%)
- Has been a PTPP Associate Member for at least 2 years
- Full Membership can be approved by PTPP Council also for therapists who have not met all the aforementioned criteria who are members of other societies for psychoanalytic psychotherapy or psychoanalysis (e.g. colleagues who have finished a training other than the one affiliated by PTPP) and have received the Certificate of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist before.
There are two paths that lead to obtaining the certificate:
- Adult psychotherapy training
- Child and Adolescent psychotherapy training
PTPP Council have specified the criteria for a person pursuing the status of supervisor or training psychotherapist with resolution no 5/2017.
Supervizors
The status of Supervisor can be issued by PTPP Council to a therapist who:
- Has been a Full Member of PTPP for at least 5 years after getting certified
- Has been undergoing psychotherapy with a PTPP training psychotherapist or psychoanalyst for at least 6 years
- Has at least 10-year experience in clinical work
- Since receiving their certificate has been constantly raising their qualifications and pursuing professional development
- Will present two unanimous positive recommendations from supervisions of two supervisors approved by PTPP and taking place after receiving Full Membership. Supervisions should regard working with patients in a setting of 3 sessions a week and should last for at least two years, each supervision once a week
- Will present documentation of their work for the development of PTPP and psychoanalytic community
The status of Supervisor of Psychotherapy of Children and Adolescent can be issued to a therapist who:
A. Is a Full Member of PTPP, acquired the PTPP Certificate for Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist of Children and Adolescent and has been working for at least 5 years after acquiring it
B. Has undergone their own psychoanalytic psychotherapy in a setting of at least 3 sessions per week for at least 6 years with a psychotherapist approved by PTPP Council as Training Psychotherapist
C. Has at least 10-year experience in working with children and youth of all age groups
D. Works as a psychoanalytic psychotherapist for at least 20 hours a week including at least 10 hours of work with children and adolescents
E. Will present two unambiguously supportive recommendations from individual supervisions that take place after acquiring the PTPP Certificate for Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist of Children and Adolescent and are issued by supervisors of psychoanalytic psychotherapy of children and adolescents from PTPP or other societies associated within EFPP’s Section for Psychotherapy of Child and Adolescent. Both supervisions need to last at least 2 years:
- First supervision: supervision of work with patient between 0-18 years old led in a setting of 3 sessions a week
- Second supervision: it may concern therapeutic process that is shorter, in a setting of 1 or 2 sessions per week. The supervision should take place once a week. The candidate for Supervisor should present their experience in working with little children, children in the latency stage and teenagers. The description of their experiences should be included in the application for supervisor status and in the description of their professional history
F. Pay attention to constant self-development in working with children and youth.
G. The candidate should be able to demonstrate their input in the development of PTPP and psychoanalytic community, especially in favor of the PTPP Section for Child and Adolescent.
H. In some cases, the candidate can be asked to participate in an interview.
Training psychotherapists
The status of a Training Psychotherapist is issued by the PTPP Council to a person, who:
- Is a Full Member of PTPP; additionally, at least 5 years have passed since their gaining of PTPP Full Membership
- has undergone their own psychotherapy with a Training Psychotherapist from PTPP or psychoanalysis lasting at least 6 years
- has been working continuously for at least 10 years as a psychoanalytic psychotherapist
- has been rising their qualifications and developing as a psychotherapist since attaining psychotherapeutic certificate
- has experience of leading at least 3 processes of psychoanalytic psychotherapy that have lasted at least 3 years in a setting of 3 sessions per week and at least one finalized process of a long psychotherapy in the same setting
- presents two recommendations from individual supervision processes issued by PTPP supervisors that are also Training Psychotherapists or psychoanalysts; at least one of them must last at least 3 years in a setting of 1 supervision a week; supervisions should regard the therapeutic processes mentioned above
- has worked for the benefit of PTPP and psychoanalytic community
interim training psychotherapists
A special license to conduct a training psychotherapy
A therapist can file for the possibility of conducting training psychotherapy before fulfilling all the necessary requirements for the status of Training Psychotherapist. The notion must be filed with the PTPP Council asking to conduct one process of training psychotherapy under supervision. To receive this status, a therapist should:
- Have at least 10-year experience in conducting psychoanalytic psychotherapy
- Undergo at least 6 years of their own training psychotherapy
- Wait at least 3 years since gaining the Certificate
- Have experience in working with patients in a setting of at least 3 sessions a week and present with one recommendation from a supervisor: it should concern a therapeutic process lasting at least 2 years in a setting of 3 sessions a week
- Presents the Council with a written agreement of another supervisor to for conducting training psychotherapy
The notion is then revised by the Qualification Committee.
A person filing for the status of supervisor or training psychotherapist can be invited to a meeting with the PTPP Council for the Council to get to know the person better or clarify any doubts regardingthe application Council may have.
The status of a supervisor or a training therapist may be acquired by a person who is a psychoanalyst without presenting recommendations if they apply for such procedure to PTPP Council.
Honorary Members
An Honorary Member is a person who has benefited immensely to the development of PTPP / psychoanalytic psychotherapy or psychoanalysis. The title is bestowed upon a person by the Board after obtaining the Council’s approval.

Supporting Members
A Supporting Member is a person, a legal entity or commercial law company that declares monthly membership fee or other financial or material assistance to PTPP. Candidates for SupportingMembers are presented by the Board and accepted by the General Assembly of the PTPP Members or accepted by the Board after gaining approval from the Council.
